PHUKET/KOH
LANTA
Thailand
is indisputably one of the best dive destinations
in the world; blessed with two bountiful seas,
the Gulf
of Thailand in the east and the Andaman Sea
in the west.
The riches of the undersea kingdom
which the Andaman Sea beholds have certainly enchanted
many divers, luring them back year after year.
Hidden within the kingdom courtyard is a symphony
of dancing colors from the abundance of tropical
aquatic life parading around the kaleidoscopic
coral reefs. Be dazzled by the acrobatics of manta
rays, the graceful maneuvers of reef sharks and
the multitude of colorfully dressed reef dwellers.
But do be watchful for those majestic whale sharks
elegantly passing through the nutrient-rich waters.

To the southern region is the crown
jewel of the Andaman Sea - Phuket; often known as the
“Pearl of the South”. Phuket is the largest
island in Thailand with beautiful stretches of fine
sandy beaches drenched in crystal clear waters. Owing
to its strategic location, scuba diving is obviously
one of the hottest sports on Phuket. Most of the dive
sites reachable from Phuket are scattered in the south
and possible day trips to the Similan
Islands to the west.
For a less commercialized version
of Phuket, look south-east and you’ll find the
exotic islands of Koh Lanta Yai and Koh Lanta Noi (“yai”
means “big” and “noi” means
“small). Emerging strong in the tourism industry,
it has just as much to offer. Likewise, scuba diving
scene is huge on Koh Lanta. It shares very similar sites
as Phuket but the most popular site diving off Koh Lanta
is undoubtedly the Southern Islands – Hin Daeng
(Red Rock), Hin Muang (Purple Rock) and Koh Rok. Littered
with colorful corals, these sites host many species
of fishes including large pelagics – giant barracudas,
reef sharks, manta rays and whale sharks.
