MANADO
 |
Splayed like a crooked hand on the
seas between Borneo and Maluku, Sulawesi is the
fourth largest island in Indonesia. The majority
of its striking beauty is occupied along the awkward
long arm of the northern peninsula in the province
of North Sulawesi and at its finger tip dons a pure
diadem – Manado.
The oceanic currents sweeping into waters between
Manado Bay and Bunaken Island carry a consistent
supply of nutrients. Hence, the level of biodiversity
is among the highest in the world with an astounding
variety of fishes and corals. |
Naturally, this treasure trove was declared
a protected marine park in 1991 – Bunaken National
Marine Park. Residing in these waters is a wide range
of marine life the likes of reef sharks, hammerhead
sharks, bumphead parrotfish, dog-tooth tunas, giant
sweetlips, Napolean wrasses and many more.
Over on the east coast in the Lembeh Straits is well-known
for its muck diving. Dive this “macro-polis”
with your eyes peeled and cameras ready to capture some
of the most extraordinary creatures the sea has to offer
- cryptic pygmy seahorses perfectly blended into seafans,
hairy frogfish perched on coral heads, stunning ornate
ghost pipefish swaying in mid-water and a plethora of
nudibranchs parading their elaborate gills.
