SIMILAN
ISLANDS
Approximately 100km northwest of Phuket
is The Similan Islands . (“Similan” is derived
from the Malay “Sembilan” which means “Nine”;
translates to “The Nine Islands”.) These
9 granite islands, laid out from north to south with
numerous rock outcrops, have one of the most dramatic
underwater environments in the world. There are sites
with adrenaline-pumping drift diving whereby others
are carved out with adventurous swim-throughs and caverns.
It goes without saying there is a diversified species
of aquatic life and corals – from leopard sharks
to lionfish, harlequin ghost pipefish to seahorses and
the occasional passing of manta rays, cow-nose rays
and whale sharks.
Due to its uniqueness, The Similan Islands
are protected by the Thai National Park Authority who
also maintains their presence on Koh Similan (Island
#8) and Koh Miang (Island #4). For conservation purposes,
accommodations are limited on these islands. Although
day-trips from Phuket
are possible but the best way to dive these islands
is on a liveaboard. There is unlimited diving around
the 30 over chartered dive sites and you’ll definitely
be spoiled for choice.
