KOH
TAO/ KOH SAMUI
 |
Mirroring
the diving scene in the Andaman
Sea on the west, the forefront of The Gulf
of Thailand’s diving industry begins with
Koh Tao and Koh Samui.
Koh Tao (Turtle Island) was only
discovered in the 1980’s and has developed
into the “scuba diving capital” of
the east where dive centers can be found on every
street corner. With 20 over dive sites within
close proximity and all with their own personalities,
it is no wonder Koh Tao lures many divers to its
shores. In contrast to the laid back atmosphere
of Koh Tao is the cosmopolitan Koh Samui for those
looking for post-dive activities of wild parties
or sophisticated cocktail lounging. |
Dive sites are spread between Koh Tao
and Koh Samui. To the west of Koh Samui is the Ang Thong
(Golden Basin) National Marine Park, made up of 42 islands
of lush tropical forests on limestone massif lined with
deserted beaches. There are swim-throughs, caves and
tunnels which you probably have seen from the movie
“The Beach”. Needless to say, the marine
ecosystem in this region is healthy and vibrant.
In the Koh Tao vicinity, the highly
celebrated Chumphon Pinnacle is considered a world-class
dive site. This underwater mountain range, surrounded
by deep waters, has regular sightings of whale sharks
and manta rays.
