BALI
 |
Indonesia is an
archipelago of over 17,000 islands, scattered
over 2.02 million sq. km. Across this span of
land masses is mystical Bali – an island
of scared lakes and mountain springs flowing through
narrow, deep river gorges into fertile plains.
What lies beneath surface of the picturesque landscapes
are exquisite seas of bounteous aquatic life.
Bali has some of the most astonishing
diving action that Asia has to offer; all with
its own characteristics. Most of the dive sites
are spread over the west, down south and over
to the east. There are several more around the
sister island of Nusa Penida. And it is here that
many divers eagerly awaiting the freak of the
ocean – the Ocean Sunfish, “Mola
Mola”.

One of the most celebrated dive sites
would be the USS Liberty Wreck in Tulamben Bay. The
120m cargo ship was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine
along the Lombok Strait on January 11, 1942. Limping
along towards Buleleng (Singaraja) under tow, she finally
beached in Tulamben to keep from sinking. With the eruption
of Mount Gunung Agung in 1963, she was pushed into deeper
waters. Now she rests in less than 40m waters in generally
calm waters.
| The Liberty wreck is home to a rich
species of rare animals and colorful coral life.
As you approach the wreck, from afar what seem like
sea whips, come to life - garden eels guarding the
wreck in the surrounding dark sandy bottom immediately
slip back into their holes when they sense your
presence. Soon enough, the USS Liberty comes into
view in its full glory of splendid colors and the
pulsating marine inhabitants. Schools of sweetlips,
batfish, fusiliers, unicornfish and big-eye jacks
swirl around its twisted steel and embracing her
is a sheer variety of rare species – painted
frogfish, pygmy seahorse, scorpionfish, striped
catfish, ghost pipefish, pufferfish. |
